Australia’s fuel-price surface
Explore reported Australian fuel prices on a continent-wide hexagonal map, compare regions and replay the verified history available in the current data publication. Prices are observations from reporting stations; they are not quotes for every location on the map.
What the map is showing
At the finest level, each hexagon uses its precomputed drive-time station assignments for the selected fuel. Equally ranked contributors use a median price. Wider views use weighted medians of those same assignments. Selecting a state clips the map without changing a border cell’s contributing stations or price.
Colour places each cell in the selected fuel’s Australian price deciles for that day. State filters retain the national daily scale, so regional patterns remain comparable with the rest of Australia.
The data pipeline
A publication freezes the station observations and drive-time assignments together. Cell prices at every zoom level, daily histories and station summaries are calculated before the map loads. Switching dates selects the stored values for that day.
Scrub back through time
Drag the timeline handle to select a day, or press play to watch prices change. A station’s last reported price is carried forward until its next observation; missing observations are never filled using a future price. The timeline includes only the period with complete cell coverage. Moving or zooming pauses playback while the new map data loads, then resumes from the same day.

The maximise button opens the map in full-screen with the mouse wheel re-enabled, the state selector chips exposed and the station-ranking panel visible so you can compare individual sites within a region.
