Licensing economics
Power BI vs Fabric
Cost Calculator
Per-user licences scale with your audience. Fabric capacity is a fixed commitment. Compare total monthly cost, change the market and find where the economics cross.
First audience where capacity costs no more
405 users · 400 viewers + 5 authors
Capacity + authors’ incremental Pro licences

Total monthly cost vs users
AUD / month · Including authors · Before taxesPro and PPU costs rise with total users, including authors. Fabric capacity includes author Pro licences. The selected licensing cut-over is 5 total users, comprising 0 viewers and 5 authors. Hover over the chart to compare monthly costs across all five plans with Nivo’s native tooltip.
Authors are included in the user count and keep Pro licences on Fabric. F64+ allows viewing with a free licence when content and access requirements are met. Cost break-even does not establish workload fit.
Updating regional prices…
Scenario & pricing
Existing Pro / E5 licences
Included Pro licences are sunk spend. PPU still needs an upgrade. Authors are additional to report viewers.
Current audience: 400 viewers + 5 authors = 405 total users.
Inspect or override prices (AUD)
Monthly per-user prices, paid yearly. Capacity reservations are one-year commitments divided by 12. Changing market, region or currency clears overrides.
Compare all capacity cut-over points
First total user count where capacity costs no more. Includes 5 authors; covered licence counts stay fixed.
Capacity & performance
A price crossing is not a performance match.
PPU uses shared infrastructure; an F SKU is a finite pool shared by your Fabric workloads. There is no fixed PPU-to-Fabric performance conversion.
Test representative models, peak concurrency, refresh windows and other workloads. Check utilisation and throttling with the Capacity Metrics app.
Semantic model upper bound
Max memory per semantic model
Max memory per semantic model
These are documented limits. Refreshes and queries need memory headroom. F256 reaches 100 GB, but that alone does not establish equivalent performance.

How the calculator counts
Per-user cost = uncovered people × full licence rate + included-Pro people × PPU upgrade rate (zero for Pro). Fabric cost = capacity + uncovered authors × Pro. Authors are counted once within total users.
The crossing rounds up to a whole person; equality counts as break-even. Covered viewers stay fixed, so the plotted audience starts with those viewers plus authors.
What the price includes
PAYG assumes 730 active hours per month. One-year reservations use full per-CU term price × capacity units ÷ 12. Pausing does not reduce the reservation commitment.
Storage, networking, migration, operations, taxes and retained PPU licences are excluded. Commercial regions in the retail catalogue are selectable; sovereign clouds need separate quotes. Confirm contract prices and local tax treatment.
