The Pump Report

The Pump Report provides an Australia-wide view of petrol prices and shows how they change over time.

01 · Geography

Price affordability across Australia

The map shows median fuel prices across Australia based on the nearest available station accessible via the road network. Colour indicates relative affordability, from the cheapest to the most expensive.

Each hexagon uses precomputed drive-time assignments for its price. Colour groups prices into Australian deciles for the selected day.

02 · Trend

The price of fuel over time.

The charts show the trend in the price spread over time. The median shows the middle price of all those advertised while the bands show ±30% and ±40% of prices around the middle.

Each row shows the median as a line, with P20–P80 and P10–P90 shown as shaded bands. Each row uses its own price scale to illustrate the shape of change; absolute values should not be compared between rows.

03 · Shape

How station prices vary

The chart shows the distribution of fuel prices advertised by station, ordered left to right from low to high. The height of each bar represents the number of stations selling at that price range.

The histogram is composed of fixed bins two cents in width. Each row is normalised to the highest value in that row.

04 · Weekly cycle

The cheapest day to fill up.

The visualisation shows the variability of fuel prices throughout the week, comparing each day's median price with the overall median price recorded for that fuel.

05 · Brands

Who is cheap, who is dear.

The visualisation compares fuel prices between brands, showing whether the name on the forecourt is associated with variation alongside the geographic patterns above.

The number to the right of each row is the difference between the brand median and the selected market median. Brands with at least 50 stations in the selected market are included and sorted vertically by median price, lowest to highest.

06 · Jurisdictions

Price spread by state

Fuel prices differ materially between Australian states and territories, both in terms of the typical level fuel is sold at and in the range of prices stations are selling it for.

Source

Every station price published by the state and territory fuel price APIs. Intraday cycle timing and catchment analysis each need an aggregation this feed does not publish, so they are omitted rather than estimated.

Remoteness

Derived in the publication, not reported by the feed: a station is metro within 50 km of a capital, country within 150 km of any significant urban centre, and remote beyond that — straight-line distance, which is conservative wherever the road detours.

Implied margin

The median pump price less GST (one eleventh) and excise (53.7 c/L from 3 August 2026), less an estimated buy price: the ex-tax price of the cheapest tenth of stations, taken to sell close to cost. No operating cost is deducted, so it is a gross figure — a margin over the discounters, not a true wholesale margin.
